Cognitive Assessment

A Cognitive Assessment, sometimes known as a Memory Assessment, is the process undertaken by one of our experienced Doctors to understand your situation.

This involves asking you questions about your current and past life experiences, medical problems, social links and identifying any areas of day to day life that are difficult.

The initial in-depth conversation with you, usually including a person close to you, lasts 60 minutes in order to give you sufficient time to hear your story and answer questions.

What steps make up a Cognitive Assessment?

Your Story

This involves hearing about your current and past life experiences, any health issues, social links and identifying any areas of day to day life that are challenging.

With your permission we ask that, where possible, we can also seek the thoughts of a loved one, who can add another perspective on your current circumstances.  This can provide useful information for any future care planning and allows our team to get a better picture of how we can support you.

Physical Checks

A brief physical examination by our doctor or nursing team is helpful to ensure we can provide you with the best care, which usually comprises a blood pressure check, pulse check and a brief neurological assessment.

Formal Cognitive Assessment

Cognitive Assessment is a process, not a test. There is no pass or fail.

Information is gathered in a variety of ways, including standardised cognitive questionnaires that are routinely used by Doctors worldwide.

Cognition encompasses more than just a memory problem.  Cognition also relates to spatial awareness, mood, behaviour and language.

Investigations

Brain function can be impacted by biochemical and metabolic problems, some of which are reversible, so we ask for a standard set of blood tests to be provided early on in the process.

Understanding the current anatomy of the Brain is also crucial, so we ask for an up to date CT scan or MRI.

The team at Sensus Cognition can organise these for you if necessary.

REFERRALS

Referrals can be made by you or a person whom you have appointed to refer on your behalf. It is important to note that you do not need a Doctor's referral.
